S7:E5 The One Where I Celebrate My Last Christmas as a Missionary

Merry Christmas! 圣诞快乐!😳

I can't believe its Christmas 🥰 such a happy season of celebration and service.

This week I did my best to give service to everyone and help others feel the Christmas spirit.

"There would be no Christmas if there had not been Easter. The babe Jesus of Bethlehem would be but another baby without the redeeming Christ of Gethsemane and Calvary, and the triumphant fact of the Resurrection. … I wish for each of you a time, perhaps only an hour, spent in silent meditation and quiet reflection on the wonder and the majesty of this, the Son of God."

I'm grateful I get to spend 2 Christmases as a missionary. It's so special! So much love and service, no thinking about what presents to receive but to give.

The only thing I wish to give was more. I wish I had more to give but my sincere service is all I can give. People have given us so much as missionaries and I cannot be more thankful!

My favorite part about this Christmas was getting to greet everyone a Merry Christmas and give simple white rabbits.

We said to a member, "sorry we wish we could give you more special gifts!" And he replied, "it's okay don't worry. You can give gifts after your mission."

My mission is one of the greatest gifts I can give to Him yet I still feel indebted because no matter how much I give back to Him will never compare to what He has given to us.

Merry Christmas everyone! Happy holidays! 🎄⭐

S7:E4 The One Where I Hit Less Than 100 Days

100 days left.

It's time to start grinding harder and working harder and giving all I can until I'm tired and exhausted!

A few highlights for the week:

○ we had our first Christmas choir performance in Kowloon Tong! It was so fun! We will be having a performance on the 24th and it will be live on Face Book.

○ we had a wonderful lesson with 2 members from China. They shared how they hadn't been to church for the last 5 years and we had a powerful lesson with them. We got to share about the blessings of tithing and the atonement. Wonderful topics to touch on! They were so nice and friendly! We just instantly clicked.

○ my poor companion got sick this week so we stayed at home yesterday and got to help her feel a little better and warmer. The temperature in Hong Kong just dropped so it has been quite the cold.

This week has been spiritually uplifting for me, I've learned much about Christ's atonement. It's a great focus as we celebrate Him during this Christmas season.

I would like to focus today's email on Jesus the Christ chapter 9: the Boy of Nazareth.

"In such simplicity is the normal, natural development of the Boy Jesus made clear. He came among men to experience all the natural conditions of mortality; He was born as truly a dependent, helpless babe as is any other child; His infancy was in all common features as the infancy of others; His boyhood was actual boyhood, His development was as necessary and as real as that of all children. Over His mind had fallen the veil of forgetfulness common to all who are born to earth, by which the remembrance of primeval existence is shut off. The Child grew, and with growth there came to Him expansion of mind, development of faculties, and progression in power and understanding. His advancement was from one grace to another, not from gracelessness to grace; from good to greater good, not from evil to good, from favor with God to greater favor, not from estrangement because of sin to reconciliation through repentance and propitiation.

Our knowledge of Jewish life in that age justifies the inference that the Boy was well taught in the law and the scriptures, for such was the rule. He garnered knowledge by study, and gained wisdom by prayer, thought, and effort. Beyond question He was trained to labor, for idleness was abhorred then as it is now; and every Jewish boy, whether carpenter’s son, peasant’s child, or rabbi’s heir, was required to learn and follow a practical and productive vocation. Jesus was all that a boy should be, for His development was un retarded by the dragging weight of sin; He loved and obeyed the truth and therefore was free."

☆ Jesus grew in wisdom. He made a lot of time and effort to study the scriptures. And what amazes me is that he was studying about himself and what has been prophesied of Him. He studied his birth, his experience and death. That must have been a hard pill to swallow. He was given his agency just like us, he could have escaped and avoided His Father's will or accept it. Fortunately, He chose the latter. He chose you. He loves you. He chose to drink of the bitter cup for you.

"When, following the conclusion of the Passover, the Galilean company had gone a day’s journey toward home, Joseph and Mary discovered to their surprise and deep concern that Jesus was not with their company. After a fruitless search among their friends and acquaintances, they turned back toward Jerusalem seeking the Boy. Their inquiries brought little comfort or assistance until three days had passed; then “they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them and asking them questions.” It was no unusual thing for a twelve year old boy to be questioned by priests, scribes, or rabbis, nor to be permitted to ask questions of these professional expounders of the law, for such procedure was part of the educational training of Jewish youths; nor was there anything surprising in such a meeting of students and teachers within the temple courts, for the rabbis of that time were accustomed to give instruction there; and people, young and old, gathered about them, sitting at their feet to learn; but there was much that was extraordinary in this interview as the demeanor of the learned doctors showed, for never before had such a student been found, inasmuch as “all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.” The incident furnishes evidence of a well spent boyhood and proof of unusual attainments. The amazement of Mary and her husband on finding the Boy in such distinguished company, and so plainly the object of deference and respect, and the joy of seeing again the beloved One who to them had been lost, did not entirely banish the memory of the anguish His absence had caused them. In words of gentle yet unmistakable reproof the mother said: “Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.” The Boy’s reply astonished them, in that it revealed, to an extent they had not before realized, His rapidly maturing powers of judgment and understanding. Said He: “How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?” Let us not say that there was unkind rebuke or unfilial reproof in the answer of this most dutiful of sons to His mother. His reply was to Mary a reminder of what she seems to have forgotten for the moment—the facts in the matter of her Son’s paternity. She had used the words “thy father and I”; and her Son’s response had brought anew to her mind the truth that Joseph was not the Boy’s father. She appears to have been astonished that One so young should so thoroughly understand His position with respect to herself. He had made plain to her the inadvertent inaccuracy of her words; His Father had not been seeking Him; for was He not even at that moment in His Father’s house, and particularly engaged in His Father’s business, the very work to which His Father had appointed Him? He had in no wise intimated a doubt as to Mary’s maternal relationship to Himself; though He had indisputably shown that He recognized as His Father, not Joseph of Nazareth, but the God of Heaven. Both Mary and Joseph failed to comprehend the full import of His words. Though He understood the superior claim of duty based on His divine Sonship, and had shown to Mary that her authority as earthly mother was subordinate to that of His immortal and divine Father, nevertheless He obeyed her."

☆ Jesus Christ understood His divine identity and potential. He knew who He was. He knew He was not the Son of Man, but that He was the Son of God. Do you know who you are? Do you know and understand your divine identity?

Jesus Christ knew He had to drink of the bitter cup and He did so because He loves you. He could have chose to save himself from the harsh death of crucifixion but He chose you. Never forget that.

S7:E3 The One Where We Do Balloon Finding 🎈

早上好!

15 months 👻

We started this week trying a new university campus, it's called hkust. Anyway, it took us 2 hours to go there haha 😂 we took the wrong bus, and then waited 40 minutes for the mini bus which were all not in service and then realized we were on the wrong stop bahah and then it took us another hour lol we were wondering if Heavenly Father was telling us not to go or go. But we finally made it anyway hahaha! And it has by far been the best university campus I've ever been in!

We also tried a new way to find people, balloon finding! One of the sisters in the mission used to work as a clown and taught us how to make balloons. It was such a fun find! So many kids came up to us and at some point I was so stressed making the balloons cause everyone wanted a flower and they were all popping hahaha anyway I'm coming home with a new skill lol

Another cool miracle we had was we had a pass off lesson that turned into an hour lesson and then we were supposed to start heading to hkust but the elders called us back for a few minutes and then we started making our way back again to the mtr which led to us meeting a girl named Alice! Turns out she was from Mainland and she was super duper friendly with us, we also found out she just converted herself into Christian. And we also found out she was a student at hkust so she helped walk us to the right bus so we wouldn't get lost. It was so cool! These simple miracles still amaze me until now.

At hkust we also met this guy Robinson, he's from Kenya. While we were doing our studies on campus we just exchanged a few smiles with him and as we were on our way to leave the campus I felt like he wasn't okay. So we walked up to him and asked him if he was fine, he started sharing how being far away from home was hard for him. Not knowing anyone in Hong Kong and having no friends was also hard for him. It felt so good to talk to him and comfort him. We are hoping he'll come to our activities to make friends! Please include him in your prayers.

We also got to help 杜姐妹 start her family history tree and it has been so special trying to help her as she explains more about her family background and her life story and how her ancestors passed away. It's been in the making! She's been waiting so long for someone to help her create her account and tree but no one has offered to help her yet. I'm so glad we get to be the ones to help her!

What have I learned this week?

BE AND DO

These two things complement each other, when we want to become something we need to do something in order for us to become who we want to become.

The verbs be and do are a doctrinal pair. They complement one another and go together.

S7:E2 The One Where I Have My 3rd MLC

 Heyo!! 你们好

This week we went to Tuen Mun and I got to ride the light rail for the first time. We visited the Jeffries family and they were so cute! They have super fun children and are all so smart, we just started our Christmas themed spiritual shares so that has been so fun asking the families to do a little Christmas bingo and start feeling the Christmas spirit!

We had MLC this week and the topic was about "What would Jesus do in missionary work?" I absolutely loved the whole training that President Chan gave and how he invited each of us to study the 4 gospels and correlate it to our missionary work. 6 months ago I started my "Character of Christ" book and I haven't been doing very good at updating that but this training has helped me get back at updating this book that helps me learn more about His character and how I can integrate it into my own life and missionary life.

I had an exchange with sister Beltran. She just arrived to the mission! And she's super cute and already such an amazing missionary. She's from Aklan and speaks 5 different dialects. It was so fun to see her work on a goal to talk to more people and build her confidence. We got to see a lot of miracles during our exchange and she definitely carried me during that exchange!

We had some fun miracles yesterday too! We had a friend come to church, we got to visit a less active and she welcomed us into her home (big big miracle), and then we met a lady in the MTR who was a former young women president but hasn't been to church because she married someone from a different religion. It was really sad because she seemed like she really wanted to come back but can't, she literally said "love is stupid"

Some things I learned this week: this is not our time, this is the Lord's time, you don't find time for yourself, this is the Lord's.

Patience in all things and always keeping others in your thoughts and prayers.

S7:E1 The One Where I'm Back to Mando 😇

大家早安!

It has been a good first week living here in Kwun Tong back in the Mando work! ✌️

We did a bunch of findings in Baptist University and it has been another weird adjustment doing Mandarin work even though I've literally been doing it forever haha. It has been fun to get rolling on in the Chinese work, definitely a shift in teaching more about prayer and simple things.

Sunday was a really special day, we were able to recognize at least 10 miracles that happened that day!

First, sister Wright thought we could take a different route going to Wan Chai as we travelled to our district conference.

☆ Our first miracle was meeting this cute little Hong Kong family who was taking their baby to a crawling competition lol, it was super natural cause they brought the topic up when they saw our tags. They were super sweet and wanted to stay in touch as well.

☆ Our second miracle was our friend Abbie who came to church and she was listening really well and was asking questions about the talks during the conference. Also a funny story, before we met, we texted her introducing myself and she responded "wow we have the same skin color, I just feel so close to this girl already" 😂

☆ Third miracle was a different set of sisters passed off a lady to us from Bangladesh and we got to give her a Book of Mormon in her language, Bengali

☆ Our fourth miracle was asking President Holyoak how to study our patriarchal blessing. He taught us an important lesson. When I asked him that question, he asked if he could grab juice before giving us an answer and then he started setting up some chairs. He then asked us how we studied the scriptures! Then he said to do the same and treat our blessings as scripture. Here are some notes I took when we had a mini one on one session with him. He's so full of wisdom! Then he asked us if we knew the reason why he had to grab juice before answering us and then he said because he needed time to receive revelation because no one has ever asked him that question and as he was answering us he was also receiving revelation. So cool!

Some ways to study it:
Annotations
Use the scriptures and cross reference
Treat it like scripture
Read patriarchal blessing everyday
Split it into 2 also 13 articles of faith: (1) love God (2) love your neighbor
Put like footnotes on it
You define it, only you are allowed to interpret it so it can mean anything!
Study it in context

☆ Our fifth miracle was walking out and then a member stopped us and he asked us how missionary work was going and then he shared his experiences when he served a mission long time ago in Scotland and it was super neat he pulled a missionary on us and still had it with him! He gave us a lot of tips and advices but those were definitely the old ways of missionary work, there is new revelation now and the work is a lot more different but we learned a lot and we felt more pumped to start applying his thoughts.

☆ Our 6th miracle was meeting a semi active member and we put her on temple date. She's preparing herself to go to the temple again and really understand it better this time.

☆ Our 7th miracle was when we saw President Wu (mission president counselor) he asked us if we needed anything or want to tell him anything so we started thinking and sister Wright and I were jokingly talking about going to Macau to become the Mandarin sisters and we didn't say anything but we smiled and then he asked if we wanted to go to Macau for pday 😂 that was so funny

☆ Our 8th miracle was 杜姐妹 we originally planned to go over to read the book of Mormon with a friend that she is fellowshipping but she 方'd us like 30 minutes before but she said to still come. It was my first time over and it was such a cute little home! She cooked for us and I felt bad cause we couldn't finish everything but she is so pure and so full of love!! As she cooked I offered to play the piano for her and then she said she really likes the song Fur Elise and then took it out and asked me to play. She was so happy!!!! And it made me so happy to serve her that way, after she finished cooking she said "I enjoyed listening to the music as I cooked, now this food is full of love and happiness" AAAAA my heart. I love 杜姐妹 she's such an angel, she is one of the reasons why leaving makes it so hard

☆ Our 9th miracle was meeting Zayn in the MTR. No not one direction Zayn. As we entered, I said a prayer that I could talk to someone who was willing to talk to me or to send someone to me. I asked this girl how she was and she said "oh! You are a latter day saint! My husband and his family are members but I'm not" and we got talking and she was so nice, she initiated the whole conversation and it was so cool. She said she would come to church her next day off.

☆ The 10th miracle is recognizing these miracles. We need to pay attention to the miracles that happen everyday.

S6:E11 The One Where I Move to Kwun Tong

早上好!

On Tuesday we went to Whampoa and met with our friend Merlyn, she came prepared... prepared to give back the Book of Mormon. It was my first time to have it returned to me and I was a little sad and she started explaining why she gave it back. We had a powerful lesson about how Heavenly Father has always called a prophet so he can communicate to us. We testified of living prophets and we know she felt something, even if she may not recognize it or accept it, we know she felt something.

We went and explored a new area this week in Lam Tin! It was so cool and breezy, winter is starting! We tried to find some Filipinas and wasn't super lucky until we found 1!!!! And she was willing to talk to us. God really does prepare people who will talk and not reject us. Just like how preach my gospel has said.. find them that will receive you.

Javis and Gavin came to the after school activity again and I told them I was getting transferred. I was so sad to say goodbye!!!! But I trust that Heavenly Father has prepared a wonderful plan for those 2 little boys, it has been a pleasure to witness some seeds get planted. The light of Christ is in every child of God. I asked them if they'll miss me and they said they would and it was so funny cause I asked Gavin if he loved me and he said he loved the 2 elders. He said "I love Messi and Ronaldo" since he calls the 2 elders that name. And I asked "what about me?" and then he said "I love you, Messi and Ronaldo" 😂 it was soooo cute. People. I love people!

We had a fun surprise for Sister Iranga's advanced birthday celebration. Since we knew we were all leaving, we decided to have a special apartment home evening. We got the transfer boards and sister Alvez announced it this time. Sister Olongayo was called to be a trainer, sister Iranga was moved to the everyday branch, sister Cuyan was called to be the new STL of our zone (that's my comp laaa), I was moved back to Mandarin work.

On Sunday the peninsula branch did a little bye-bye party for the sisters who were leaving and saying goodbye to the sisters was hard but I know I'll get to see them again. I've developed some good relationships with the members and I was happy that leaving was hard cause I know I've done some good here.

My new companion is sister Wright, wow finally! We were both trained at the same time and I now have a chance to work with her and get to know her a little bit better! We also moved to a new apartment together in Kwun Tong. It's a little bit like the province, it's quiet, not a lot of people, lots of Cantonese people so it's been fun! We talked to a bunch of Mandarin speaking ladies and it was nice to see the tender miracles of getting to move to a new place and meeting our neighbors.
